Why do Americans love superheroes?
What is behind the craze over superheroes? Why do you find so many superheroes only in America?
As a longtime resident alien in America, I noticed a curious cultural phenomenon I have not seen anywhere else. Americans love superhero characters! Superman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, Batman, Black Panther, Iron Man, etc.
These superheroes have distinct characteristics. Invariably, they have superhuman abilities, save civilians, and fight against villains. These are not surprising. Who does not want to see social injustice corrected by someone who can do so?
I found it curious why Americans resort to imaginary superhero characters as a form of entertainment and thereby find a respite from mundane and boring reality.
I did not find a satisfactory answer to my question, so here is my attempt to analyze the psychology behind American superheroes.
The Origin and the History
Though there is some debate about who the first superhero was, Superman by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster from DC Comics popularized the genre in 1938.
